    Welcome to Columbus Nikita!!

    By Bethany | June 21, 2008

The first round came and went, and so did our number 19th pick!!  We went ahead and took the #6 pick overall and came out with Nikita Filatov.  I am thrilled with this decision, he’s a Russian who has already given his notice to his team, also, he’s a left wing, not exactly what we need, but I think he’d look pretty good on a line with oh say, Nikolai Zherdev on his right?!  Nikita speaks fluent English, his mom has been teaching him since he was 4.  He’s 6′ and 172 lbs, he needs to add a little weight, but all in all I am so happy.  Here is what the scouting report said about him:

Director of European Scouting Goran Stubb

“Nikita is a leader, has a great attitude, excellent work ethic and tons of talent.  He has matured during the season and leads by example.  He is an excellent skater who can change pace, even at top speed. Despite his size, he still plays aggressive, taking and giving hits.”

Under-20 Team Russia coach and two-time Stanley Cup Champion, Sergei Nemchinov

“He is a talented hockey player with a good technique and good speed, too. He definitely has an NHL upside because he can score, is a well-rounded player and is responsible in the defensive zone.”

Now, let’s talk about our #19 draft pick.  There was a rumor going around that RJ Umberger would be coming to Columbus, again, I didn’t pay attention to it. And, then it came to pass.  We sent our #19 draft pick and a third round, to Philadelphia, for RJ and their 4th round pick.  We get our centre, that we so desperately needed.

It may not be the huge splash, but, shoot, it works for me.

I’m looking forward to watching him; possibly next year? I’m glad he didn’t go to New York; i’d never get to see him.

Yeah you guys have a lot of foreigners on your team and in your system. I’m jealous. The Hawks are all Canadian and American; it’s so blah.

Bethany - Yeah we have some decent talent up front, but we need a better goalie and some better D-men.
(That’s exactly what my mom said when Nikita walked up to get his jersey.)

Q - I’m pretty sure he’s made of angel food cake with chocolate frosting and strawberries in the middle.

Just look at him, he is delicious. Poor boy is not going to know how to handle all of the ravenous American and Canadian females.
