Jackets 6 Blues 4
By Bethany | January 12, 2008
The Blue Jackets got revenge on the Blues beating them 6-4 last night in Nationwide Arena. It was one of the more interesting games of the season, the Blues got on the board first and when that happens the Blues are 16-3-4, and that’s when I got depressed, I start believing what everyone else was saying earlier in the season, when they said we don’t have what it takes. Then Rick Nash got on the board with his 23rd goal of the season. The Jackets played a hard hitting game, but, sat back in the third period a bit and allowed the Blues to tie the game up at 3 each. The Blues were given every opportunity to win with the Jackets taking a lot of penalties in the third. We even gave the Blues two, five on threes. Leclaire had this to say about our penalty kill:
“Our kill’s been good all year, it’s won a lot of hockey games for us. Tonight was a big turnaround, those two big kills.”
Leclaire was good last night, he did help us kill off those penalties, however the last goal he let in, it was a little pathetic. But, that’s ok. Nikolai Zherdev was an absolute GOD on the ice last night. His first goal was absolutely beautiful, I suck at describing goals, so here’s how Portzie described it:
With the score tied at 3 in the third period, Zherdev carried the puck into the Blues’ zone and let it drift slightly behind him, as if he were looking to make a drop pass.
Instead, he passed it through his skates, carried it wide across the top of the slot and took a wrist shot that beat goaltender Hannu Toivonen.
It was one of those “Z” moments, made for the highlight reel and made a touch sweeter by Backes’ closing in for a big hit right before Zherdev shot.
Zherdev had chance after chance last night, he was looking for revenge on the Blues, after the hit he took. He showed it on the scoreboard. Two goals on the night and was the first star of the night. Adam Foote had quite the night also with three assists, when asked about Foote’s game during the post game press conference Hitch described it as:
“hard, bizarre”
Well, yeah, he took an unsportsmanlike conduct in the third, and for a while just looked like a mad man skating around on the ice. Anyway, Derrick Brassard made his NHL debut last night. He looked good, and even though he didn’t get on the score sheet, you can see the talent that this kid has. Here’s what he had to say about his NHL debut:
“I was pretty nervous when I started the game but everything went well. I didn’t play a lot in the third period but when our line played, we played pretty well. We didn’t get scored on. I’m happy. First game, first win.”
We’re happy you didn’t get scored on too Brassard…by the way do we have a nickname for this guy? Brassy, Bra, Braz? Anyone got any suggestions, my mom referred to him as that one hot kid with the cute accent. That seems like a little much. Anyway, we’re glad he’s here.
And, let’s talk about Jason Chimera the new papa, he scored his first goal since his son was born. It was good to see him get on the board for the first time in 26 games. Stay tuned for my pre-game post on the Predators, and look out for a live blog of the game because tonight IS the night!!!
