    Free Agent Signing: Mike Commodore

    By Bethany | July 2, 2008

The Columbus Blue Jackets have come to terms with defenseman Mike Commodore.  He signed a five year deal worth $18.75 million.  Commodore is a great addition to our hockey club.  He is a hard hitter, and he works hard.  He won the Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006.

“We are building a team identity based on competitiveness and being hard to play against and Mike fits that very well,” said Howson. “He is a physical presence on the blueline, has won championships at various levels throughout his career and we think he will be an excellent addition to our hockey club.”

Welcome to the Blue Jackets Mike!!

UPDATE :  The Dispatch had some quotes from Commodore, that I think I should share.  He talks about the roll he will play in Columbus:

“The timing of the call is what impressed me, because it showed me that they really wanted me,” Commodore said. “I asked (coach Ken Hitchcock) and Scott Howson want sort of role they saw me playing, and what they described — physical play, lots of minutes, a leader in the room — it was just exactly the kind of role I want to be in.

“I was really impressed, and I can’t wait to get to Columbus now.”

Also, Michael Arace has a great post up, and it really is a must read.

What a great pick up! Mike was a terrific guy on the ice and in the locker room at Carolina, and helped us win the Cup in ‘06. We miss him and wish him the best with Columbus.

Amy ~ I know I can’t wait until next year!!
Rocky ~ I know, I liked him when he was with the Canes, he’s always had a very likable personality, so I am happy that he is on my time. He adds some much needed experience.

I really like this. Replaces Adam Foote nicely, and with 2 Cup Finals and a (lockout) Calder Cup final in the last 5 years, he has plenty of playoff and championship experience.

I agree, and he’s a great guy in the room, which I think is something we need.

Between Commodore and Torres your team is certainly more red-headed…

      Enjoy Commie,
His hair and personality alone are worth the contract. Hopefully I can catch him at a game next time I am up in C-bus. Someone let me know if there are some off-season activities coming up in the next 3 weeks as I will be up in C-bus in about 7 days.

I believe our prospect camp will have started at some point while you’re there. I’m not sure of the exact dates though. When I do I will be sure to let you know.
