Detroit Red Wings Stanley Cup Champs!!!

    By Bethany | June 5, 2008

PITTSBURGH - JUNE 04: NHL commissioner Gary Bettman presents the Stanley Cup to Nicklas Lidstrom #5 of the Detroit Red Wings after defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins in game six of the 2008 NHL Stanley Cup Finals at Mellon Arena on June 4, 2008 in Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania. The Red Wings defeated the Penguins 3-2 to win the Stanley Cup Finals 4 games to 2.Image by Getty Images via DaylifeThe Detroit Red Wings are the 2008 Stanley Cup Champs!!  It was quite the game.  The Detroit Red Wings got on the board first with Brian Rafalski scoring on the power play.  It was the only goal of the first period.  It looked the Penguins could come back at any second.

In the second the Red Wings scored again, Valterri Filppula made the score 2-0.  Evgeni Malkin scored his first goal of the finals.  Then the race was on.  No other goals were scored in the second period.

The third period was intense hockey.  The Red Wings were pressuring, and it looked like they were on a constant power play.  With a little over a minute and a half remaining, Jiri Hudler took a hooking penalty.  The Penguins pulled Marc Andre Fleury, and had six skaters on.  Marian Hossa scored and made the game 3-2.  The pressure was on, the Red Wings were unable to clear the puck and the Pens with seconds remaining almost scored.

Chris Osgood raised his arms and the celebration began.  The Red Wings poured onto the ice celebrating.  Marian Hossa sat down on the ice, Evgeni Malkin was kneeling, Sidney Crosby went over and said a few words to Fleury.  For a moment, I felt bad for the Penguins.  The Conn Smythe winner was announced, it was Henrik Zetterberg.  That didn’t surprise me at all, he has been a force the entire playoffs.

Then, it was time.  Time for him to come out.  Lord Stanley entered the ice, and he looked amazing.   I was so excited for Nicklas Lidstrom to raise the Cup, as the first European Captain to lead his team to the Stanley Cup.  They interviewed most of the guys they were all so happy.  Then, it was an interview, from the locker room of the Penguins, it was a total shift in emotion.  I would have felt bad for them, but their fans kind of ruined it for me.  They boo’d everything, the Conn Smythe trophy winner, the Stanley Cup, the Red Wings passing the Cup.  Ridiculous.  I can understand, it sucks to have your team lose, but the Red Wings worked hard also.  Show some respect.

    Congrats Red Wings!!
