Derick Brassard…
By Bethany | July 5, 2008

What do you do when your entire season rests in the hands of 20 year old? You embrace it. Okay, so maybe the success of the entire season doesn’t come down to Derick Brassard, but, it’s going to come close. We have called off our search for a number one center, because, we believe we have one in our midst. The job is his, now he needs to go out onto the ice, and prove himself.
What I found most interesting, was in a blog written a few days ago Aaron Portzline said:
I don’t think people are appropriately excited about Umberger. He is not an All-Star. He is not a No. 1 center. But he’ll be a damn good No. 2 center, and look around the league — lots of teams have No. 2s on the No. 1 line. Funny, but true: there are only 15 to 18 No. 1 centers in the league.
I guess I realized that, but then again, I didn’t. There really is a shortage of quality centers in the league. We drafted one, we haven’t ruined him (like we did Brule), and well now he has his chance to prove his spot. He is doing what Jared Boll did last summer, and working with our training staff and getting tough, and working hard…along with some other future Blue Jackets.
Brassard will not be participating in Development Camp that is going on from July 7 - July 11, so we will have to wait until training camp to see the improvements.

Bethany -
I’ve always enjoyed your comments on Rakers - you’re one of the few that don’t make me shudder when i read the comments…
Not sure if you were at the Draft party, but i had a chance to talk to Brassard and Voracek together and they seemed to mesh well. I asked if they’d be playing on a line together next year and Derick spoke first saying, “hopefully!”
I wonder why he’s not participating in the camp this week though - he’s had a season, but he’s in c-bus… why not get out there and skate? I’d rather see our D prospects go against him and Jake than a 6th round from ‘04.

Nate ~ Thanks
I wasn’t able to attend the Draft Party, I would love a line with Brassard and Voracek! I’m sure you read, on Puck-Rakers by now that Brassard hurt his back…hopefully he gets better soon!! We need him!
