Columbus Blue Jackets to retire #…
By Bethany | September 3, 2008
Seriously, I have been trying to spend my time wisely. You know, studying, working, writing for the school paper, and well you know, trying to have some sort of social life. But, something came up today, and it really got me thinking. There are a lot of hockey clubs preparing to retire a certain players number.

- St. Patrick in Montreal *maybe this will break the curse?*
- The Capitals retiring #11 in honor of Mike Gartner.
It got me thinking…do the Blue Jackets have a player that deserves this type of honor?
In reality, the answer is probably, no. Rick Nash will probably get there eventually. But, anyone else? I really can’t think of anyone. David Vyborny pops into my head.
Vyborny played every single NHL game of his career with the Blue Jackets. Every single season, he was the man who gave it all, night in, night out. He didn’t have a good season in 2007-2008. But, he was injured most of it.
What do you guys think? Anyone stick out?

Until we make the post-season, we don’t have any business retiring numbers.
I don’t have a problem with David’s name and number being put on some kind of a “Wall of honor”, and heck, put Jody Shelly, Epsen Knutsen, and Tyler Wright on there with him, but I don’t think we should be putting numbers into the rafters before then.

Agreed wholeheartedly with Matt W.
Put their names on a wall of honor, or etch their names in the cannon. Include those he mentioned, and probably Ron Tugnutt.

Matt that is a great idea. I don’t think we need to retire any numbers either. I really do like the “Wall of Honor” though.
Skraut etching names into the cannon would be AMAZING. I love it!

The team his too young. We must have a tradition for doing this and the jackets have no stability sooo….. until winning a stanley cup or be part of serie years after years I am not sure about retirement on that team.
(my first language his french so sorry for some kind of error on the text if i had one I really like jacket too it his my second team after montréal canadien.)

tchialma ~ I agree with you for the most part. I don’t think we need to win a Stanley Cup, but we definitely do need to be part of a series. And you are fine!! I love the Habs by the way!!

52 that # should be retired …… No, not for the normal reason. not because the player who wore it is to be respected. But because WE as a team should never be disrespected in such a way again. ……….. i hate adam foote the rat bastard Stephen

Nash will be the first. I don’t think Vyborny did anything extraordinary in Columbus. Don’t lower the bar that much so quickly.

The Wild don’t either. Well, we have #1 up there for the fans, but no players. I don’t think the Jackets have been around long enough yet to retire any numbers. It’s better to wait than to retire a number for a player who doesn’t really deserve it just for the sake of doing it.

Tapeleg you are silly.
kmad I agree with you.
Elise I agree Elise, but I really like the etching of the cannon idea. Like, a lot.

Until we have a perpetual all-star, nobody gets their name retired. That’s the sort of thing reserved for Hall-of-Famers and to date we have none (of course Nash might do the deed, but too early to commit)
That said, I suspect we might want a team Hall of Fame, where guys like Vborny could be recognized.

I agree Flagger. I think a team Hall of Fame would be ideal. I think some of these guys definitely need some recognition.
