The hockey season is over…or just beginning…

    By Bethany | June 6, 2008

The Stanley Cup has been handed out.  The Detroit Red Wings have drank out of Lord Stanley.  They are having their parade today.  The hockey season is just about over.  I suppose it will officially come to an end on Thursday, June 12, when the hockey stars all gather together for the NHL awards show.  Then hockey fans will get an eight day break, and the new season will begin, with the NHL Draft.

There really isn’t an off season for hockey fans.  So, let’s talk about the Awards show.  There are some awards that have already been decided.

The Presidents Trophy is given to the team with the best record in the NHL.  This season the trophy is going to the Detroit Red Wings!!  They went 54-21-7 this season.

The Art Ross Trophy is given to the player who leads the NHL in points.  This season it was the Washington Capitals, Alexander Ovechkin who led the league with 112 points (65 goals and 47 assists).

The Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy is given to the leading goal scorer.  Once again, Alexander Ovechkin is the winner.

The William M Jennings Trophy is given to the goalkeeper(s) having played a minimum of 25 games for the team with the fewest goals scored against it.  This season it was given to Chris Osgood and Dominik Hasek of the Detroit Red Wings.

The Clarence S Campbell Bowl is given to the Western Conference Champions, the Detroit Red Wings.

The Prince of Wales Trophy is given to the Eastern Conference Champions, the Pittsburgh Penguins.

And, now for the awards that have not been given out yet.

The Hart Trophy is awarded to the player judged best in the league.  The nominees are the Washington Capitals, Alexander Ovechkin; the Calgary Flames, Jarome Iginla; and the Pittsburgh Penguins, Evgeni Malkin.  While there is no doubting any of these guys ability, there is no question that Alexander Ovechkin was the best player in the league, with his number of goals, amount of points, and his all around skill.

The Vezina Trophy is awarded to the leagues top goaltender.  The nominees are the New Jersey Devils, Martin Brodeur; the San Jose Shark, Evgeni Nabokov; and the New York Rangers, Henrik Lundqvist.  There is no doubt in my mind that Nabokov will be receiving the Vezina.  He played 77 games, and had a 46-21-8 record.

The Norris Trophy is awarded to the league’s top defenseman.  This isn’t much of a contest, but the nominees are the Detroit Red Wings, Nick Lidstrom, the Boston Bruins, Zdeno Chara, and the Calgary Flames, Dion Phaneuf.  Nick Lidstrom will walk away with his sixth Norris Trophy.

The Calder Trophy is given to the league’s top rookie.  The nominees are, Chicago Blackhawks, Patrick Kane, Washington Capitals, Nick Backstrom, and the Chicago Blackhawks, Jonathan Toews.   My best guess is that Patrick Kane will win the Calder, I know that it won’t be Toews as he suffered an injury this season and had to sit out.  Nick Backstrom got things going the second half.

The Lady Byng Trophy is given to the league’s most gentlemanly player.  The nominees are, Jason Pominville, of the Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, Pavel Datsyuk, and the Tampa Bay Lightnings, Martin St. Louis.  My guess is that it will be Pavel Datsyuk.

The Frank Selke Trophy is given to the league’s top defensive forward.  The nominees are, the Detroit Red Wings, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg, and the New Jersey Devils, John Madden.  All of the nominees are so good, I am going to say that it will be Henrik Zetterberg.

The Jack Adams Award goes to the League’s best coach.  The nominees are, Detroit Red Wings, Mike Babcock, Montreal Canadiens, Guy Carbonneau, and the Washington Capitals, Bruce Boudreau.  I am going to say that Mike Babcock will win, but the Caps Bruce Boudreau really deserves it.  He took the Caps from the Eastern Conference worst team, to a playoff team.

The Masterton Trophy goes to the player that shows perseverance to hockey.  The nominees are Toronto Maple Leafs, Jason Blake, Detroit Red Wings, Chris Chelios; and Edmonton Oilers, Fernando Pisani.  I believe this will go to Jason Blake, who battled leukemia.

The Lester B. Pearson award is given to the NHL’s best player as voted by the NHLPA.  The nominees are the Washington Capitals, Alexander Ovechkin, the Calgary Flames, Jarome Iginla, and the Pittsburgh Penguins, Evgeni Malkin.  Again, I am quite confident that this will go to Alexander Ovechkin.

So there is the run down on the award show.

Amy ~ Which one’s do you not agree with?
Faux ~ Do you really think Brodeur wins Vezina? It breaks my heart to say he won’t, but I can’t deny Nabby’s talent!!
